Position Statement

Central Heights USD #288 is committed to providing a caring, friendly and safe environment for all students and staff so they can learn and work in a positive atmosphere. Bullying of any kind is unacceptable at Central Heights. If bullying does occur, all pupils should be able to report it and know that incidents will be dealt with promptly and effectively. Anyone who knows that bullying is occurring is expected to report it to staff or administration.

Definition of Bullying and Cyberbullying

“Bullying” means:

An intentional gesture or any intentional written, verbal or physical act or threat that is sufficiently severe, persistent or pervasive that creates an intimidating, threatening or abusive environment for a staff member that a reasonable person, under the circumstances, knows or should know will have the effect of:

1.Harming a staff member physically or mentally;

2.Damaging a staff member’s property;

3.Placing a staff member in reasonable fear of harm;

4.Placing a staff member in reasonable fear of damage to their property;

5.Any form of intimidation or harassment prohibited by USD #288 Board of Education policy.

“Cyberbullying” means:

The use of communication technology (cellular phones, the internet, and other forms of electronic media) to bully.

Rights and Responsibilities of Students, Staff, and Parents

1.All teaching and non­teaching staff should have an understanding of what bullying is.

2.All teaching and non­teaching staff should know the school policy on bullying and follow it when a suspected bullying incident occurs.

3.As a school district, we take bullying seriously. Staff should be assured that they will be supported if a bullying complaint/incident form is submitted.

4.Bullying will not be tolerated.

Procedures

1.Report bullying incidents by submitting a bullying complaint/incident form to administration.

2.Bullying complaints/incidents reported to administration will be documented in written form with a description of the incident, date of the incident, names of people involved (including witnesses), and date complaint/incident form was submitted.

3.The administration will investigate and determine the appropriate consequences for every bullying complaint/incident form submitted.

4.The administration will monitor all cases to ensure repeated bullying does not occur.

●Reporting to Local Law Enforcement

False Reporting and Retaliation

False reports or retaliation for harassment, intimidation or bullying also constitutes a violation of this policy and can result in consequential actions being taken as listed above.

Training of Staff and Students

The administration will provide staff training, at least once per year, which serves the following purposes:

●To raise awareness regarding the problem of bullying

●To communicate the fact that bullying behaviors will not be tolerated

●Emphasize positive behavior

●Train staff when and how to report bullying behavior.
