Local Scholarships 2011

This is a listing of local scholarships, generously offered by local citizens, groups, clubs and organizations.  After the name of the scholarship you will find a brief description.  All of the local scholarships and most of the Area Scholarships are on the CDs which were distributed to seniors.  Copy the document from the CD onto your computer.  Or you may click on the title of the scholarships listed in this document to access the application.  Copy the application to your computer.  A paper copy is available, just ask.

Etta Blanche Smith-Dahlgren Scholarship – April 1 deadline, students will interview with school personnel. Application is on the CD or click on the name of the scholarship on this page to open the application.  Save the document to your computer.

*Friends of FFA Scholarships – These have been distributed to seniors in agriculture classes, but any CHHS senior who has ever been in FFA may apply.  March 15 deadline.  Application is on the CD or click on the name of the scholarship on this page to open the application.  Save the document to your computer.

Giving Back Scholarship – April 1 deadline, two scholarships of $1,500 each. ($750 per semester).  Click on the name of the scholarship on this page to open the application.  Save the document to your computer.

Lane Rutarian Scholarship – April 1 deadline.  Application is on the CD or click on the name of the scholarship on this page to open the application.  Save the document to your computer.

Lloyd Burkdoll Memorial Scholarship – April 1 deadline.  Application is on the CD or click on the name of the scholarship on this page to open the application.  Save the document to your computer.

Mt. Carmel Knights of Columbus Council #2680 – Seniors from CHHS and Anderson County may apply,  April 1 deadline.  Application is on the CD or click on the name of the scholarship on this page to open the application.  Save the document to your computer.

Patriots Bank Scholarship – April 1 deadline.  Application is on the CD or click on the name of the scholarship on this page to open the application.  Save the document to your computer.

Pepsi Scholarships – April 1 deadline, school personnel interviews.  Application is on the CD or click on the name of the scholarship on this page to open the application.  Save the document to your computer.

Richmond Ruritan Scholarship- March 15 deadline.  Application is on the CD or click on the name of the scholarship on this page to open the application.  Save the document to your computer.

*TEACH Scholarship – sponsored by Central Heights Teachers association.  Must be planning to pursue a career in education. 2 letters of recommendation.  May 1 deadline.  Application is on the CD or click on the name of the scholarship on this page to open the application.  Save the document to your computer.

Area Scholarships

Franklin County Sheriff’s Office 2011 Criminal Justice Scholarship-/EKAN Scholarship – This scholarship has not yet arrived and will be distributed as soon as it is available.

Franklin County Farm Bureau Association- Four $500 scholarships available.  Parent must be a Farm Bureau member. Scholarship can be used at any two- or four-year college or technical school in Kansas.  Two letters of recommendation required.  Application is with your local scholarships.  Student mails in completed application by April 1.  Application is on the CD or click on the name of the scholarship on this page to open the application.  Save the document to your computer.

Franklin County Friends of KSU – Student must plan to attend Kansas State University.  April 1 deadline.

*Greeley Knights of Columbus-  Essay and letter of recommendation from a teacher.  March 17 deadline.  Application is on the CD or click on the name of the scholarship on this page to open the application.  Save the document to your computer.

National Wild Turkey Federation –Will not be awarded this year.

P.E.O. Chapter GL, of Ottawa –  Charlene Faringer Scholarship -One $900 scholarship.  Females only.  Can be used at 2 or 4 year college, university or vocational-technical school.  Student may have Mrs. Allen deliver completed applications. Over the Road Gang, Inc. – All seniors may apply but first consideration will be given to students interested in pursuing automotive related fields (could include welding, etc.).  Application is on CD– Deadline to apply is April 1 (you may turn this one in to Mrs. Allen to deliver).  Application is on the CD or click on the name of the scholarship on this page to open the application.  Save the document to your computer.

Veterans of Foreign War Post 5901- Warren Sellens Essay Scholarship Contest- One $500 scholarship for writing a 500 words or less essay on “Why should we honor our veterans?”  Essays must be submitted no later than April 15, 2011.  Application is on the CD or click on the name of the scholarship on this page to open the application.  Save the document to your computer.

PRHS Alumni Association – Parker Rural High School is awarding three $400 scholarships.  Applicant must be a relative of a PRHS graduate.  Letters of recommendation are encouraged.  Student mails in completed application by April 1. *Kansas City Associated Equipment Distributors Scholarship Application – Student must plan to be a full-time student in an associate of applied science degree or certificate in either Diesel Mechanics or Heavy Equipment Repair.  2.5 high school g.p.a. required.  March 1, 2011 deadline.  Application is on CD or click on the name of the scholarship on this page to open the application.  Save the document to your computer.

*Olathe Health System- Must plan to pursue a career in the healthcare field.  Applications must be at the Olathe address by March 4, 2011.  3.0 gpa or above, must have ACT or SAT score.  2 letters of reference.  Can be used at 2 year or 4 year college.  Get an application at www.olathehealth.org/Careers or see Mrs. Allen

OTHER SCHOLARSHIPS

*2011 AFSA (American Foreign Service Association) National High School Essay Contest – $2,500 scholarship to student and $500 scholarship to school. Free trip to D.C. for winner and parents.  Essay is 750 to 1,000 words on assigned topic  Previous winning essays as well as the application for this contest are available at http://afsa.org/essaycontest/  Deadline is April 15, 2011

*Edward Zahn Agriculture Scholarship – Only for use at Allen County Community College.  4 scholarships for full room, tuition, fees and books.  Must be an Ag. Major.  March 1 application deadline.  See Mrs. Allen for an application.

*2011 Holocaust Remembrance Project Essay Contest – Scholarships from $300 to $10,000.  Each of the 10 first-place winners receives an all-expense-paid trip to South Florida.  You must write a 1,200 word (or less) essay on any aspect of the Holocaust that interests you.  Entries must be submitted on-line.  Application, rules and instructions are at http://holocaust.hklaw.com/2010/index.asp  Deadline is April 15, 2011.

*WAL-MART Associate Scholarship, Family Foundation Scholarship, and Sam Walton Community Scholarships – these scholarships are for part-time student employees or students who have a parent employed at Wal-Mart part-time, full time employees and for students who do not work at Wal-Mart or have a parent that works there, In other words, there is a scholarship option for everyone.  Criteria includes:  ACT score, grade point average, class rank, extracurricular activities, community involvement and work experience.  Criteria does vary depending on the scholarship.  Applications are required and are available on the internet at www.walmartfoundation.org

*Kansas Society of Certified Public Accountants accounting scholarships for Kansas high school seniors.  A total of six thousand, eight hundred dollars ($6,800) are awarded as follows: one (1) each for $1,300, $900, $800, $700 and $600, and; five (5) for $500 each.  Offered without regard to financial need, scholarships are awarded to students who:
 rank high in the ACT or SAT examinations,
 will attend a Kansas university or college,
 plan to major in accounting, and,
 possess demonstrated leadership activities.

ACT or SAT test scores must be submitted by a counselor. Students are also required to submit a completed questionnaire.  Scholarship recipients are chosen from among qualified applicants by members of the KSCPA appointed by Foundation Trustees.
Interested students should ask their counselor to send a copy of the student’s ACT or SAT test scores together with verification of the student’s home address, to KSCPA Educational Foundation, 100 SE 9th Street, Suite 502, Topeka, KS  66612.  

The deadline for submission of test scores is March 9, 2011.  Once test scores are received, a questionnaire/short essay form is sent to the student.  The deadline for submission of questionnaire/essay forms is April 20, 2011.
