We just finished our fifth week of summer athletic development (fourth week in the weight room). This was a heavy week with many new PRs set and several names being moved up the record board. Very proud of the progress we have made so far this summer!!

The Central Heights School District would like to wish Mr. Brian Spencer a happy retirement! Mr. Spencer has had a major impact on education in the State of Kansas in his 33 years of education. The five years leading the Vikings have been no different as he has helped us overcome many obstacles during his tenure. Mr. Spencer mentioned the most memorable moment at Central Heights was the water test over Christmas Break of 2017. Mr. Spencer will be forever remembered for his infectious laughter and “good mornin’” during any part of the day. Thank you, Mr. Spencer, for all that you do, for showing us how to enjoy each day and always pushing us to do what is best for kids! Enjoy your retirement!

All Central Heights students going into grades 6-12 are invited to being Summer Athletic Development tomorrow morning from 6:30am - 8:00am. ** Please bring your own water bottle with your name on it. ** We will meet at the flag pole by the MS entrance. Our plan is to be outside unless there is bad weather. The workout plan for this week is designed so that students are able to stay 6’ apart during the entire workout. We will be recording attendance and temperature as students arrive in the morning to ensure even more safety for our students. If you have questions, contact Coach Risch at brisch@usd288.org or 785-869-3555 (x1105)

Congratulations to Mrs. Jean Nilges on her retirement from Central Heights. Mrs. Nilges has worked with a vast number of children over many years and we extend a deep and gracious “Thank You” to her! Mrs. Nilges holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Education from Mid-America Nazarene. She has 42 additional credit hours, mostly in the field of reading. Mrs. Nilges taught at the Heidi and Peter Preschool for seven years, Head Start in Lawrence for one year, was the Director at the Daycare Center for two years, a paraprofessional in Ottawa for two years and a substitute teacher in Ottawa for 10 years. She has spent the last 15 years at Central Heights Elementary. At CHES she taught third graders for four years, prekindergarten children for two years, kindergarten students for 1 year, and then eight years as the Reading Recovery and Title I Reading teacher. Getting to know her students and their families, watching the students grow academically, and seeing them grow up is something she remembers fondly. She has stayed in contact with many of her students over the years. Mrs. Nilges remembers learning from and about her co-workers. She loves the family atmosphere. “It is great how we pull together for each other when we need to. I will never forget building a milk jug igloo in the library with Mrs. Smith.” She has been married to Lynn Nilges for eight years. Together they have 16 grandchildren. Their large family has had some great celebrations. They are looking forward to many more to come. Mrs. Nilges will be spending more time with her father who is in a nursing home facility. The Nilges’ hope to do some traveling and spend time on special projects around the house including planting lots of beautiful flowers. Mrs. Nilges states she will miss her very dear friends at CHES. If things ever get back to normal, she would like to do some substitute teaching. The CHES staff would like that too, Mrs. Nilges!

The Central Heights School District would like to wish Mr. Michael Carey a happy retirement! Mr. Carey has been wandering the hallways with his side secured belt and a pencil behind his ear for 26 years. But has served in education for a total of 42 years. Teaching business, theology and the best computer science teacher this side of the Mississippi, Mr. Carey has also had an impact by coaching football, women’s basketball, men’s and women’s track as well as many other duties such as CTE coordinator. Mr. Carey has thoroughly enjoyed his time at Central Heights as both a student and a teacher, but those of us within the district have some very distinct memories that stick out with his dry sarcastic humor. Most notably, during inservice confessing his long forgotten (high school) crush on another staff member. Mr. Carey has shown passion for education and the Viking Community and we will truly miss the laughter he provides each day. We wish him the best of luck as he has more time with family including his Wife Deb, Son Chris, Daughters, Ashley and Malissa as well as five grandchildren. Mr. Carey plans to stay active within the Central Heights School system and community.

The Central Heights School District would like to wish Mrs. Jeanette Lowry a happy retirement! Mrs. Lowry has had a huge impact on the Viking Family teaching in the district for 21 years (26 years overall) including Spanish I, II, and III, Introduction to Spanish, and Multiculture Class. In addition to her teaching impact, Mrs. Lowry has also sponsored the Spanish Club and served as a junior class sponsor. Mrs. Lowry’s favorite part of her time at Central Heights was bonding with her students. The students will miss her unconventional ways to get their attention and learn new concepts! We appreciate all that Mrs. Lowry has done for the students of Central Heights. We wish her good luck and safe travels as she looks to spend more time with family (Daughter and Son-In-Law Megan and James Osladil, Daughter Marissa Lowry, and Grandchildren Emma, Brodie and Madison Osladil and travel to different states.
